How to make junk look beautiful…

I can’t believe it’s already been two months since our Spring 2023 Market, what a blessed market it was! Staging our booth in the barn brings me SO MUCH JOY!!! It’s like time stands still while I’m creating, and I lose all track of it! I heard time and time again that weekend, “Can you please just come decorate my house?’ and “I don’t get how you can make junk look so beautiful!” Hahahaha!!! First off, I WOULD LOVE TO go decorate people’s houses, so if that is something you’re interested in, we can chat. As far as making junk look beautiful, I really think the trick is layering colors and textures!!

Balancing old with new helps to make the junk look pretty as well, an old beat-up pitcher takes on a whole new look when fresh greenery is added! Playing around with layering is something that takes time to figure out, I will have something “set” and then change it and move it 5 more times! Don’t get discouraged if something just doesn’t look right, just keep tweaking it! Step back, look, move, shift, add more to it, etc. Something I also try to be mindful of is color wheel complimentary colors! I know, weird right?? Taking it back to art class! But for real, I learned the importance of complimentary colors in cosmetology school, and it has really helped when staging!! for example: At my Spring market I staged terracotta pots with blue jars because blue and orange are opposites on the color wheel, making them complimentary colors! This makes the colors pop when put next to each other! Am I crazy or does that make sense???

Decorating with JUNK around my house is a fun and most of the time budget friendly way to add character around my home! As a junk repurpose-er I sometimes struggle with what to keep and what to clean up and sell to you, but over the years I have gained a pretty good collection of yard “art”. It’s my favorite to use as planters and pops of fun around my yard! One day YEARS ago I was sitting in my booth at a vendor market and the booth across the way had a vintage roof vent for sale… as the breeze would blow it would spin and I decided it would be great yard art! So my hubby put it on a post for me and it’s been in my flower bed ever since. We live on a major highway and I often wonder if people think it’s strange but I’m strange so we’re all good here!!! Hahahaha! All of the old junk is so fun to play with in different seasons but Spring is definitely my favorite!

One more tip…. in a lot of ways, I’m a bit of a perfectionist… but when it comes to decorating, I am far from it!! I actually love scratched, broken and not perfect pieces and have them incorporated throughout my home. This old dresser piece is broken and was destined for the burn pile! I rescued it and it is now a staple piece in my living room. At Christmas I swap out the picture for a wreath and it frames it beautifully! I hope this inspires you to think outside the box, find beauty in the rusty and broken and add a little junky flare to your home! As always, thanks for being here!!
