DIY Old Window Greenhouse

Is it functional as a greenhouse? Most likely not! But is it super cute, adds so much character to our little slice of heaven and fun to decorate? ABSOLUTELY!!!! Because those that know me, know I collect old junk, we had acquired a lot of old windows that friends had given us that just sat around for forever; lots of them broke out in the weather (oooops!!) some of them we sold at vendor markets but for the most part, they just sat there, on the side of the barn. I had a goal for junking projects in 2022, “Let’s use what we have!!’ There are some things you get in the junkin’ world that you immediately use, repurpose or make something out of. Then there are things that sit around and sit around until you finally decide you’ll never use it, or a lightbulb moment happens of how to use it. If you’re a junker you know exactly what I mean. We had talked about building a little window greenhouse for a while but never put it into action until we decided we were tired of looking at the pile of windows. We decided to use them rather than pitch them and so it began….

We (and by we I mean my Hubby!!) started by puzzling together the widows we had to create the side walls. We knew we’d have to fill spaces in but that was actually what I was most excited about, adding junk and making it our own!! For the base we again used something we already had, it was the floor of a dog pin (God rest old Bogart’s sweet soul). It is made of 2x6s for the frame and deck boards on top. For the framework to screw the widows to we used scrap wood we had in the shed which I then painted white so you couldn’t tell what was new wood and what was old.

For the roof we used the metal roofing leftover from building our pole barn, again we were lucky to have scraps laying around! The parts where the windows didn’t quite all match up, we used rusty corrugated tin, very old porch ceiling pieces from Derick’s family’s old house (my favorite part), the bottom half of a chippy old door and slats from old pieces of a gate. Why did we have all of this sitting around, well….I’M A JUNKER!!!!! Hahaha!! It all eventually comes in handy, I guess! The door came from my parent’s house (my momma is my junkin’ partner, so she has a collection as well). It doesn’t really fit; we didn’t frame it to fit…that was on purpose, it adds character of course. When it was all finished, we added little pieces of picket fence to the sides that a friend had given to us, and I can’t wait to plant flowers around it this Spring!

Our sweet little greenhouse is just a pieced together junky little masterpiece that we did together as a family. It was our fun summer of 2022 project, the kiddos’ hideout (complete with secret escape door) and just another little piece of our home that we’ve made our own. Sorry I didn’t tell you exactly what to go buy from your local hardware store to recreate this yourself, that’s just not how we roll! Hahahaha!!! But I hope our story inspired you to build something to call your own…now go be AWESOME!!!!

These chippy blue pieces came from the front porch ceiling of the Jones family country home. So glad I was able to salvage them and make them a part of our sweet little greenhouse!

Several local photographers have now used the greenhouse for photoshoots!! I love giving our little hometown pretty things to use for photos!!

The evening we closed out our Spring 2023 Market!
